Le Barroux, Mont Ventoux

Between Carpentras and Malaucène, surrounded by wooded hills and hectares of vineyards, Le Barroux is a perched village and a true haven of peace. A picturesque place that deserves a visit for its panoramas, its historical and cultural heritage, its abbey and its lake.

What makes this village special?

Le Barroux offers breathtaking panoramas over the laces of Montmirail, Mont Ventoux and the Comtat Venaissin plain. It has the characteristics of a perched village: sloping streets, pretty old restored houses and many fountains. The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, in the Romanesque style, has a square bell tower surmounted by a 16th century wrought iron campanile with a staircase.

The walk through the village leads to the imposing castle, a veritable eagle's nest. From the 12th century, it has undergone many transformations over the centuries, a fire that lasted ten days during the Second World War and restoration work in the 1960s. In 2020, the Vayson de Pradenne family launched a project site rehabilitation.

Today, the castle offers free or guided tours and hosts various cultural and artistic events, a whiskey distillery, and a tea room La terrasse d'Eugène, for a gourmet break full of charm!

Another place of interest: the Sainte-Madeleine du Barroux abbey. Well hidden in the countryside, this monastery founded in 1970 welcomes a community of 57 Benedictine brothers in a sumptuous setting. You can visit it, you can even make a retreat there, and a shop offers for sale the delicious products worked by the brothers: olive oil, bread, vain, etc. During the visit, you will be able to hear Gregorian chants. The abbey is known for preserving this art. For amateurs, a Barroux app has been designed to allow them to follow the news of the monastery and the services live!

The surrounding countryside offers opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing and horse riding. Lac du Paty, a few kilometers from the village, allows you to practice water sports in a magical setting. For wine lovers, the region's cellars, famous for their gigondas and château-neuf-du-pape, offer tastings in a friendly atmosphere.
