Vaison-la-Romaine, Haut Vaucluse

Dominated by Mont Ventoux, Vaison-la-Romaine is a town of character, some districts of which are of impressive archaeological and historical interest. To visit this city is to travel back in time and relive 2,000 years of history! For lovers of old stones but also for those who love good food, outdoor events and hikes!

What makes this town special?

The lower town has a very interesting ancient part thanks to its two archaeological sites concentrated around the tourist office. From the Puymin site, take one of the paths to the ancient theatre. This magnificent building organizes events, the most famous being the Vaison Danses International Festival, with companies from all over the world. History enthusiasts will not miss the Théo-Desplans Archaeological Museum, presenting antique objects and statues. Below, the site of Villasse promises an incredible visit through what was once the merchant town and the wealthy quarter of the city, with its columns and mosaics of rare beauty, its public baths and its luxurious Gallo-Roman villas.

To go from the lower town to the upper town, you have to cross the Ouvèze by the magnificent Roman bridge, with a single arch. Listed as a historical monument, it has withstood floods and the onslaught of time. The discovery of old Vaison plunges you into the Middle Ages. Cobbled streets, stone houses, flower gardens, shaded squares, fountains, the church, Notre-Dame-de-Nazareth, and its 11th-12th century cloister. At the very top of the hill is the castle of the Counts of Toulouse. Built in the 12th century, it has retained only a 13-metre high stone keep. At its foot, you can contemplate the view of the entire city and Mont Ventoux. Magical !

Don't leave Vaison without tasting the sausage with Nyons olives, Rasteau natural sweet wine, ice cream and chocolate! The large Provençal market takes place on Tuesday mornings.

Nature lovers will not miss the Théos nature area, which combines a fitness trail, rollerblading, cycling and mountain biking trails, fishing and orienteering trails and a mini-golf course. This park is best known for its garden of the 9 damsels, a place full of poetry with large carved stones, 9 of which, in the center, carry a poem, a message from the 9 European cities of culture: Reykjavik, Bergen, Helsinki, Brussels Prague , Krakow, Bologna, Avignon and Santiago de Compostela. The bamboo grove, next door, is a zen place, which gives the opportunity to recharge your batteries, relax and dream...

A place that will delight young and old!
