Clos du Calvaire

Mont Ventoux > Sorgues

Located near the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Clos du Calvaire is a family estate founded in 1923. Handed down from generation to generation, it was first developed by the Mayard family, then by the Roumieux family.

Today, the estate is run by a new generation who continue the work in continuity. Vineyard management is based on organic farming, with particular attention paid to agroecology to promote biodiversity and soil sustainability.

Each parcel is cultivated with respect for its environment, with the aim of producing wines that are representative of the appellation. The cuvées highlight the grape varieties and terroir characteristics of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Present in Châteauneuf-du-Pape for over ten generations, the Clos du Calvaire family has long been linked to the history of the local vineyards. Long before the estate was founded in 1923, the family's ancestors had already been cultivating the land in the village, then known as Châteauneuf Calcernier, since the 18th century.

In those days, farming was based on a variety of crops, including olives, almonds and fruit trees. The transition to viticulture took place gradually, with know-how handed down and adapted over the generations.

At the end of the 19th century, the phylloxera crisis marked a turning point. Gratien Mayard, faced with the destruction of the vineyard, chose to stay and replant his vines, thus contributing to the revival of local production.

In 1923, his son Alphonse and his wife Marie produced the first bottle under the Clos du Calvaire name. This marked the official birth of the estate, built on experience and family continuity.

Today, this heritage continues through an approach that aims to express the characteristics of the terroir and pass on this history through each cuvée.
