A natural approach to winemaking
At Domaine de la Coquillade, winemaking is guided by a close relationship with the vineyard. Fermentation is carried out using indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grapes, rather than commercial alternatives. This approach supports the expression of the terroir and contributes to the structure of each wine.
Soil and vineyard management
Particular attention is given to soil health, with the development of humus playing a key role in maintaining nutrient balance, especially in the dry conditions of the Luberon. As a result, the grapes arrive at the cellar with sufficient natural richness, reducing the need for additional intervention.
The use of cover crops, including legumes, helps improve nitrogen levels in the must, supporting natural fermentation processes, including malolactic fermentation.
Traditional methods in the cellar
In the cellar, the focus remains on methods that limit intervention. Wines are not fined, and filtration is carried out using diatomaceous earth.
Fermentation and ageing take place in a range of materials, including ceramic, wood and concrete, allowing each wine to develop according to its characteristics.
This approach reflects a balance between established techniques and vineyard-led practices.
DOMAINE DE LA COQUILLADE IN THE LUBERON
Set within the Parc naturel régional du Luberon, the Domaine de la Coquillade brings together hospitality and winemaking within a historic estate. Its origins are linked to the eleventh century, when Cistercian monks from Sénanque established the first structures on the site.
A WINE ESTATE WITH LONG-STANDING ROOTS
Viticulture became part of the estate two centuries later, with the planting of its first vines. This agricultural heritage continues today, forming the foundation of the domain’s identity. In two thousand and six, Andy Rihs began transforming the former bastide into a hotel and wine estate, introducing a renewed focus on quality. Following his passing in two thousand and eighteen, the estate has been managed by his sons, Oliver and Tobias Rihs, with an emphasis on biodynamic practices and long-term sustainability.
A CONTEMPORARY ESTATE SHAPED BY ITS HISTORY
Today, the Domaine de la Coquillade combines its historical background with a modern approach to hospitality and wine production. The name itself refers to the “couquihado”, a migratory bird in Provençal, reflecting the idea of a place that offers a seasonal refuge within the Luberon. The estate continues to evolve while maintaining its connection to the landscape and its agricultural traditions.
