Domaine des Masques
Aix-en-Provence > Aix-en-Provence
Set in the foothills of Mont Sainte-Victoire, this estate is surrounded by hills and garrigue. The vineyard is planted at altitude, with plots distributed according to different exposures.
Work is based on a parcel-by-parcel approach, with attention paid to micro-terroirs and the specific conditions of each vineyard. The soils, composed of clay-limestone, marl and limestone scree, influence the structure of the wines.
Vinification is adapted to each plot, with a precise choice of ageing containers, including barriques, demi-muids and amphoras, to preserve the freshness and balance of the cuvées.
The estate cultivates both traditional grape varieties and others less common in Provence, such as chardonnay, viognier, pinot noir and syrah. These grape varieties are grown as single varietals or blends, depending on the desired profile.
The wines produced are distinguished by their structure, precision and expression of terroir.
The history of the estate dates back to antiquity, as evidenced by the remains of a Roman villa and traces of ancient agricultural activities, including the cultivation of vines, cereals and olives.
In the Middle Ages, the Knights Templar settled on the Cengle plateau and founded one of the first commanderies in Provence. They undertook drainage works that extended the area available for cultivation and gave the land a lasting structure.
The name "Les Masques" has its origins in local traditions. In Provençal, lei masquos referred to figures associated with medicinal practices and knowledge of plants. The plateau, rich in biodiversity, attracted these healers in search of specific species used in their preparations.
This historical and cultural context has helped forge the identity of the area, which today is marked by a long continuity of occupation and agricultural use.
