Pernes-les-Fontaines, Mont Ventoux

On the edge of the magnificent Vaucluse plateau and close to the prestigious wine-growing villages, Pernes-les-Fontaines is a city of water and history which has managed to retain all the character of a Provençal village where life is good. A city that leaves no one indifferent!

What makes this town special?

This incredible city, nicknamed "the Pearl of the Comtat", is the former capital of the Comtat Venaissin. As a result, it retains an exceptional historical heritage. It benefited from a natural spring, which led to the creation of many fountains from the 18th century. The city had 36 fountains in 1936. It now has more than 40, not counting the private fountains, several of which are classified as historical monuments. A “circuit of fountains” allows you to admire them. The Gigot fountain or the Cormoran fountain are among the most beautiful.

Pernes-les-Fontaines has retained the traditional character of a medieval fortified town with the remains of stone ramparts with the Notre-Dame gate, from 1548, the Notre-Dame-des-Grâces chapel, built in 1510, long the seat of the Freemasons, the dungeon of the old castle of the Counts of Toulouse, in ruins, the covered hall, from the 17th century, alleys that can be traversed on foot or in a horse- drawn carriage, and shaded squares, with sound canvas, the soft murmur of water. It is in the heart of the historic center that you will visit the Tour Ferrande, from the 13th century, whose frescoes tell the story of the conquest of Sicily by Charles of Anjou. A real historical comic strip!

Pernes-les-Fontaines is also a rich cultural life with many events that punctuate the year. Lantern walks, Pernes-les-Photos, the Melon Festival, Pernes-en-Musique, the Font'arts festival, the Old Book Fair. Every four years, the Heritage Festival allows you to relive like 150 years ago!

Do not miss the evening market, every Wednesday from April to mid-October, or that of Saturday morning all year round, to provide you with local products.
