Maussane-les-Alpilles - 1

Maussane-les-Alpilles, Alpilles

At the foot of the Alpilles chain and a few kilometers from Baux-de-Provence, Maussane is a pleasant village which stretches out in a valley in the middle of olive groves. Center of olive production, it has some historical curiosities and offers visitors typical Provence activities.

What makes this village special?

It is called the "village of a thousand streams", because if no major watercourse crosses it, it has several small streams that are called here "gaudres". A stroll through Maussane allows you to discover some traces of the past: the Planet washhouse and fountain, Place Laugier de Monblan, the Quatre-Saisons fountain, the Napoleon III washhouse and the Sainte-Croix church, from the 18th century . century.

Maussane's most original element is undoubtedly this incredible freestone map of France, unique in France. Measuring 5 by 5 meters and weighing approximately 6 tonnes, this monument represents France at 1/200,000 scale . It is made up of as many stones as there are departments. Each of them was offered by a tailor.

With 40,000 olive trees, Maussane and its neighbor Mouriès are the leading producers of olive oil in France. Do not leave without having tasted this oil of exceptional quality!

Maussane-les-Alpilles offers many activities on sunny days: Camargue races or toro-piscine in the arenas, herdsmen games in the streets of the village, traditional parades, free shows, and a Festival of Time Regained, which plunges the village back into the last century.
