Cavillargues - 1

Cavillargues, Nîmes & Uzès

Located in the Rhone Gard, in the hollow of a fertile valley watered by the Auzigues, Cavillargues will seduce you if you are looking for calm, countryside and the charm of old stones and you want to learn about the rhythm of a rural village.

What makes this village special?

Roman civilization has left visible traces in Cavillargues: a very beautiful dolmen, magnificent wine-growing villas, funerary steles.

The architectural heritage of the town includes two buildings protected as historical monuments : the Notre-Dame-du-Saint-Sépulcre hermitage, listed in 1981, and the Château de La Fare, listed in 1990. The hermitage is a chapel from the 12th century built by the knight Guillaume II de Sabran on his return from the First Crusade. It became a priory in the 15th century and was enlarged in the 19th century by two side chapels.

The chapel stands isolated in the woods northeast of Cavillargues . Guided tours are offered during Heritage Days.

The Château de la Fare sees its history begin in the 12th century with the construction of a dungeon at the foot of which is built a fortified house leaning against the rampart of the village in the 13th century. The current castle dates from the 16th century and was rebuilt after the previous one burned down. It can also be visited during Heritage Days but you can admire "one of the three Renaissance facades of the Gard and undoubtedly the most beautiful", according to the castle website.

If the village is especially interesting for lovers of calm, it allows quick access to the unmissable sites of the region: Uzès, the Pont du Gard, Avignon, the gorges of the Ardèche...
