What makes this village special?

Facing the Luberon, on its rock, the perched village of Ansouis seduces with its charm and its history. To visit this place is to take an incredible journey through time.

Imagine the life of medieval ladies and lords as you explore this 1,000-year-old castle, the heart of a village-fortress that is one of the most authentic in Provence. Several places testify to a habitat dating from the Gallo-Roman era: a castrum, in the Middle Ages, probably succeeded an oppidum. From 1261, there is in any case the trace of a fortified construction.

Ansouis was first a possession of the house of Forcalquier, and returned to the Sabran family from the 12th century, by marriage and by natural succession. In 1178, Raymond I of Sabran married Gersende, Sovereign Countess of Forcalquier and Nice. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the Sabrans donated some property to the monks of Saint-André de Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.

The Renaissance castle was saved from abandonment in the 1930s by wealthy antique enthusiasts. Today, the building and its gardens exude the authenticity and charm of yesteryear.

Above all, don't miss the Museum of Wine Arts and Crafts, at Château Turcan, near the village, to find out all about the work in the vineyard, the oenology laboratory, cooperage, glassware and wine service. An unforgettable experience !
