Golf de Valcros

La Londe les Maures

Created in nineteen sixty-four from the plans of architect Fred Hawtree, the Golf de Valcros extends across fifty hectares on the foothills of the Massif des Maures. The eighteen-hole course follows the path of the Maravenne stream, with fairways, bunkers and greens integrated into a landscape of cork oak forests, olive trees and oleanders.

A course shaped by a narrow valley

The layout reflects the constraints of its setting, with Hawtree designing the course within a relatively narrow valley. This results in a technical course where positioning and precision are key, while still offering a varied round.

The natural surroundings remain central to the experience, with views across a preserved environment throughout the course.

A site with a layered history

Before becoming a golf course, the Valcros valley had several uses, including mining and agriculture, with vineyards, chestnut trees and olive groves. The area was gradually consolidated into a single estate during the nineteenth century.

Water management has long been a defining feature of the site, notably with the construction of an early dam in the late eighteen hundreds to support agricultural use. This resource later contributed to the development and maintenance of the golf course.

From landscape to golf course

When the land was later divided and acquired by separate entities, part of the estate was dedicated to creating the golf course. Fred Hawtree adapted his design to the terrain, finding solutions to fit eighteen holes within the available space.

The result is a course that combines technical design with a strong connection to its history and landscape.

THE HAWTREE DESIGN HERITAGE

Frederick William Hawtree was one of the leading golf course architects in Europe during the nineteen fifties. Part of a family of architects, he continued the work of his father, Frederick George Hawtree, and later influenced his son Martin. Across France and Europe, he contributed to both the creation of new courses and the renovation of established ones.

His work includes projects at Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche, Le Vaudreuil and Fontainebleau, as well as international courses such as Hillside in England and Royal Waterloo in Belgium. The Hawtree name is associated with courses that have hosted high-level competitions, reflecting a design approach rooted in long-term playability.

KEY PRINCIPLES OF A HAWTREE COURSE

Hawtree’s approach to design follows several consistent principles, which can also be observed at Golf de Valcros.

Respect for the natural terrain
Rather than reshaping the land extensively, Hawtree worked with the existing landscape. Mature trees, natural watercourses and the original contours are preserved, allowing the course to integrate into its environment.

Efficient course flow
In line with traditional British design, the transition between holes is kept compact, with tees positioned close to the previous green where possible. This creates a more continuous rhythm of play.

Strategic bunker placement
Bunkers are used selectively to influence decision-making rather than simply penalise mistakes. Often smaller and less immediately visible than on American-style courses, they require knowledge of the layout and careful planning.

A BRITISH INFLUENCE IN PROVENCE

Although located far from the United Kingdom, Valcros reflects this British design tradition. The course prioritises strategy, precision and integration with the landscape, offering a style of play that rewards thoughtful course management.

The result is a layout that remains consistent with its original philosophy while adapting to modern expectations.
