Restaurant Jan
Côte d'Azur / French Riviera > Nice
Restaurant JAN began with a simple ambition: to open a place where chef Jan Hendrik could share cuisine inspired by his South African heritage while working with the ingredients of the Côte d’Azur. The location itself was discovered by chance, yet it soon became the home of this culinary project.
Located in the Old Port district of Nice, JAN is an intimate restaurant with around twenty seats. The kitchen focuses on local and seasonal ingredients sourced from nearby farms and producers along the Riviera.
Chef Jan Hendrik grew up on a farm in Middelburg in northern South Africa. This upbringing shaped his respect for seasonal produce and sustainable farming. That philosophy continues to guide the restaurant today.
The menu brings together elements of South African and French cuisine. Dishes may reinterpret traditional South African favourites such as melktert, bobotie or biltong, adapted to the ingredients available in the region. Through these combinations, the kitchen explores contrasts between flavours, origins and culinary traditions.
Over the years, the restaurant has evolved while remaining attentive to its guests, to the seasons and to the surrounding landscape. Sustainability and responsible sourcing remain central to its approach.
Each dish reflects the journey of the restaurant and its connection to both South Africa and Nice.
JAN's cuisine reflects the meeting of the French Mediterranean and Chef Jan Hendrik's South African heritage. The menu follows the seasons, using ingredients sourced from local farms, artisan producers and regional markets on the Côte d'Azur. The cuisine emphasizes responsible sourcing, sustainability and waste reduction. The seven-course tasting menu showcases the work of producers and the kitchen team, guiding diners through a sequence of dishes shaped by available seasonal produce. During the meal, guests are invited to visit MARIA, where a selection of cheeses and preserves are presented as part of the experience.
The wine program includes selections from France and South Africa. Guests can choose between Classic and Signature wine pairings, each designed to complement the tasting menu. The cellar also includes organic and natural wines, as well as a non-alcoholic pairing option for those who prefer an alternative to wine.
