La Bastide de Moustiers
Moustiers-Sainte-Marie
Set in a bastide surrounded by four hectares of land, this restaurant offers Mediterranean cuisine in tune with the seasons. Many of the vegetables used in cooking come directly from the estate's garden, and charcoal grills play a central role in the preparation of many dishes.
The meal often begins with a selection of vegetable dishes that showcase the freshest produce. Vegetables can be served simply prepared, lightly fried in tempura or preserved in brine.
The menu also includes carefully prepared seafood. Examples include marinated red mullet with subtle smoky notes, or braised red pork served with fava beans and garden chard.
Outside, olive trees frame the terrace, providing a quiet spot to dine while admiring the surrounding countryside. The setting reflects the rural character of Provence and complements a menu that puts vegetables at the center of the plate.
Alain Ducasse discovered the Bastide de Moustiers while motorcycling through Provence. Attracted by the building's character and its location between lavender fields and ancient olive groves, he decided to make it part of his vision of hospitality in the region. In 1994, he purchased the bastide from a local potter with the intention of creating a tranquil retreat. The property was soon open to travelers, allowing them to experience the atmosphere of a traditional Provencal home. Today, the bastide reflects Ducasse's approach to hospitality, where guests are welcomed into a setting that values simplicity, regional character and attentive service.
The bastide was restored with the help of local craftsmen and decorator Tonia Peyrot. Care was taken to preserve the character of the 18th-century building, while introducing objects collected by Alain Ducasse during his travels. Today, La Bastide de Moustiers is a four-star hotel and gourmet restaurant. The property remains closely linked to its surroundings, retaining the atmosphere of a traditional Provencal inn, where comfort and simplicity come naturally together. In the warmer months, guests often enjoy their meals on the shaded terrace overlooking the valley. Whether staying at the hotel or visiting for a meal, the setting offers a quiet place to pause and appreciate the pace of life in this part of Provence.
