A Riviera restaurant established in nineteen sixty-nine
African Queen first opened in nineteen sixty-nine in Beaulieu-sur-Mer and has remained closely associated with the French Riviera dining scene ever since. Located on the port, the restaurant looks across the harbour and the Mediterranean.
Over the decades, the restaurant has welcomed a wide mix of guests, including local residents, visitors, artists and travellers exploring the Riviera.
In two thousand and twenty-three, a new chapter began when Riccardo Giraudi, Philippe Schriqui and Patrick Gioannini took over the restaurant. Their approach continues to build on the restaurant’s history while maintaining a menu centred on Mediterranean ingredients and well-known signature dishes.
Today, African Queen reflects the relaxed yet refined atmosphere often associated with the Riviera. The setting, overlooking the port, remains an important part of the experience
The recent refurbishment of the African Queen was carried out by the Humbert & Poyet agency. Their work modernized the space while respecting the restaurant's history and identity. The original character of the place was preserved, and new design elements were introduced to refine the setting. The details of the dining room allude to Mediterranean influences. Textiles, woven rattan chairs and emerald green tiles sit alongside carefully designed lighting. Each element contributes to creating a setting that reflects the Riviera lifestyle while retaining a clear link to the restaurant's past.
The African Queen menu focuses on Mediterranean cuisine and several dishes closely associated with the restaurant. Wood-fired truffle pizza, Niçoise tuna salad and fresh fish cooked a la plancha are long-standing favorites. In addition to these dishes, the kitchen introduces seasonal additions. Examples include tomato tarte tatin served on parmesan shortcrust pastry, Wagyu beef and warm shrimp with olive oil and Menton lemon. The menu reflects a combination of established recipes and new interpretations, all guided by ingredients commonly found along the Mediterranean coast
