Provence is often imagined in summer... lavender fields in bloom, chilled glasses of rosé by the pool, and bustling markets under the midday sun.
Yet winter in Provence has a rhythm of its own. With fewer visitors, crisp air and softer light, it becomes a time when local life feels more authentic. This is also the season when centuries-old traditions take centre stage. From mid-November through to January, towns and villages across the region celebrate Christmas with markets, concerts, nativity scenes and processions that are deeply rooted in Provençal culture. This article highlights the villages where these traditions shine the brightest in 2025. We look at Aix-en-Provence with its famous Christmas markets and illuminations, Fontvieille with its long-running Santon Fair, and Grimaud with its festive charm on the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Together they represent three different ways of experiencing a Provençal Christmas, from artisanal fairs to lively street performances. Whether you are planning a winter holiday or simply curious about how Provence celebrates the festive season, here is your guide to the most Christmassy events and festivals of 2025.
Aix-en-Provence | a season of markets and lights
Aix is one of the most festive destinations in Provence during December. The elegant Cours Mirabeau is lined with illuminated trees and wooden chalets, while the city’s squares fill with markets dedicated to food, wine, crafts and santons.

• 14 November - 31 December: Christmas market along Cours Mirabeau
• 14 November - 31 December: Santons Fair, featuring master craftsmen of the region
• 26 - 30 November: International twin town market, with crafts and gastronomy from Aix’s partner cities
• 30 November: Festivities kick-off with the tree lighting in Town Hall Square and illuminations along Cours Mirabeau
• 4 - 7 December: Gourmet Winegrowers’ Market

Nativity and tradition
Nativity scenes take centre stage in Aix, with displays by master santon makers and a large traditional crèche in Parc Jourdan. Maison Fouque, one of the region’s most famous workshops, exhibits a year-round nativity scene alongside the table of the thirteen desserts. The Provençal calendar also includes concerts, the Veillée Calendale on 13 December, and the Pastorale Maurel on 11 January 2026 - a traditional play that mixes folklore with the Nativity story.
Fontvieille: a Provençal santon fair
In the heart of the Alpilles, Fontvieille is one of the most Christmassy villages in Provence. Each November, it hosts the Santon Fair and Christmas Market, now in its 42nd edition.
8 – 9 November 2025
• Santon makers from across Provence present their hand-crafted figurines, from traditional shepherds and bakers to imaginative modern characters
• A Christmas market with local produce, crafts, and festive specialities
• Activities for families including wooden games, face-painting, children’s workshops and horse rides
• Musical performances and street entertainment throughout the weekend
The fair is free to attend and has become a meeting point for collectors and families preparing their nativity scenes. Its setting in Fontvieille, with stone houses, olive groves and views of the Alpilles hills, makes it especially atmospheric.
Grimaud: Christmas on the Gulf of Saint-Tropez
Perched above the bay of Saint-Tropez, Grimaud combines medieval charm with festive spirit. The season begins early with a Santons Fair in October, followed by December markets and concerts.
Key dates in 2025
• 25 October - 2 November: Santons Fair at the Arthur Bauchet hall – one of the earliest fairs of the season
• 14 December: Organic Christmas Market, featuring regional produce and artisanal gifts
• Throughout December: Christmas festivities across the village with illuminations, concerts, and family events
The narrow streets of Grimaud, lit with seasonal decorations, are particularly beautiful in the evening. Visitors can browse stalls, enjoy concerts in historic chapels, and see the village illuminated against the backdrop of the Gulf.
From November’s early santon fairs to January’s Epiphany celebrations, Provence celebrates Christmas with deep-rooted traditions. Each village brings something different: Aix offers the most varied markets, Fontvieille showcases the craft of santon makers, and Grimaud delivers a festive village atmosphere overlooking the Mediterranean. Visiting Provence in winter means fewer crowds, a calmer pace, and the chance to experience Christmas as locals do – in markets scented with truffle and mulled wine, under twinkling lights in medieval squares, and with the warmth of centuries-old traditions.
