Nestled in the heart of the protected natural park of the Alpilles you will discover a village that has preserved all its authenticity. From the top of its perch, the charming village of Eygalières dominates the graceful landscapes where fields of olive trees line the plain, and the vineyards on the horizon. The beautiful old houses of the village are built in local stone and stand in a row along the small winding streets. Eygalières has some of the most beautiful private residences that are available to rent as holiday homes. history of Eygalières is shrouded in the mists of time. The museum, located in Eygalières Chappelle des Penitents, attests to the presence of residents in Neolithic times, but historical times for Eygalières began around the 12th century when the church of St Laurent, and later a château were constructed at the top of the hill above the centre of the village. The 12th century chapel on the road to Orgon not far from the centre of the village of Eygalières was dedicated in 1222 to Sainte Sixte II, a pope of the early Christian church who was martyred by the Romans in 285 AD. Another church at the top of the hill commemorates St Sixte's successor, St Laurent, also executed by the Romans three days after the death of Sainte Sixte. St Laurent the patron saint of Eygalières, is revered in an annual procession through the village held on the Tuesday following Easter. Today, you are more likely to see chic Parisians and French celebrities looking for some relaxation in one of the south's most desirable locations. Only 10 kms from the busy town of Saint Rémy de Provence and 15 kms from Les Baux de Provence, Eygalières is an ideal village from which to base yourself.
