Ashley, creator of the website CuriousProvence, is a passionate Canadian foodie that offers market tours in Provence. After writing an article about the Saint Remy market one of the stallholders asked if she knew anyone looking for work… That started her stint of working three years in the Provence markets of Saint Remy de Provence, Eygalières, Gordes, Arles and Isle sur la Sorgue. First, she sold plants and flowers (she used to be a florist in Montréal), and then found herself making tomates farcis, or stuffed provençal tomatoes.

After arriving early in the morning, purchasing ingredients at various producers and setting up the stall, Ashley would start the long process of chopping onions, hulling out the tomatoes, stuffing the tomatoes and steaming them. They had to be ready as soon as possible for the regulars. Ashley worked for one of the stallholders that has worked in the markets for the longest. Consequentially, she knows many of the workers. If you take a tour with her, you’ll meet these characters and might even have a glass of wine with them. It’s the real experience!

Ashley’s morning market tours start with a coffee at the local café and a slice of something sweet and delicious from the local patisserie. Then, Ashley will take you around the stalls tasting local cheese, olives, sweets and while telling you local tidbits of history. After about 2 hours, you’ll share a picnic behind one of the stalls right in the middle of the market. Soak in the ambiance!

Ashley is currently taking reservations for tours on Wednesdays in Saint Remy de Provence and Fridays in Eygalières. The tour costs 70€ per person including a picnic. Minimum of 2 people. It’s possible to combine market tours with full day tours as well as vacation photography photoshoots. Being a curious Canadian, Ashley has a few talents.
